Parker is Mandy's (one of my BFs) son. Parker's Mommy & Daddy are both only children which allows me to be Auntie N.

Logan is my cousin's son so at least we are actually related! But Logan's Gigi (Grandma) has been "Aunt Sherry" to me my whole life even though she is really my cousin. So there was no question that I would be "Aunt Nin" and I'm pretty sure Log thinks I Rock since every time we "hang out" I take him for breadsticks (his Fave). He even forgave me for taking him to the Olive Garden where the breaksticks had "boogers" (aka Garlic) on them!!

REDECORATING!!!!

This is my room while I'm staying at the Parents House but it is actually the "grandchildren's room." Yes, my mother has a room for all of the grandchildren she does NOT have! Nothing wrong with being prepared, right?!! And, well, I'm not going to say anything about it because it's quite the place to rest my head and it's very inspirational for my work (well, as of today it is)! Before today, the only thing we had were the Red Quilts at the end of each bed! It's been an on going project but today we really stepped it up!

We purchased these duvets at Pottery Barn and the accents of leopard are by Ralph Lauren!

This is the bathroom inside the bedroom. We found these canvases on clearance at Hobby Lobby - don't they look great? We are going to use a few different shades of green in the bathroom... work in progress ;-)

This is where the magic happens... My Workspace!

Here is the Full View.... Please excuse the mass amount of magazines and binders underneath the middle part of the desk ;-) All of that will soon be put on a Bookshelf (when we find one) and that area will become my second workstation (with a beautiful new Mac Book Pro).

Q: Can you only purchase online or can you buy in drug/dept. store?

A: I've only purchased this product online but that does not mean it's not available in drug stores/department stores. I haven't been able to find it in a store but I have not tried too hard either ;-)

*I realized this morning that the link I posted yesterday was for 4oz. which is a problem since Amazon is offering 8oz for $22.50. And, I've always paid right around $25.00 for 8oz. {I hope you can forgive me... I didn't even know they made it in 4oz.} If you ordered from the link I gave you yesterday, cancel the order!

{not so new} what's new in my bathroom?

I'm pretty sure I've touched on this before (I think my very first 'what's new in my bathroom?') but Belle of the Ball is looking for the perfect self-tanner and her comments show that many of us are in need of reducing the winter whiteness!

My friend, Arden, led me to this little bottle of gold. St. Tropez Tinted Self-Tanning Lotion. Here are the KEY POINTS:

1. Must be Step 3 (the pump is the giveaway... no pump... it's not the right one)

2. The lotion is tinted aka it's almost black. This makes it very easy to see where it is going and how much you need unlike the colorless lotions.

3. MIX IT with your regular daily lotion. 1/4 St. Tropez 3/4 Daily Lotion. Or 1/2 & 1/2. This gives you nice color without looking like you have self-tanner on.

This morning it was All-Family Workout... in our Finest Winter Gear! Don't look too closely though... it's a bit scary. Can't you tell they love getting their picture taken at 7:20AM? But anyway, it was a great start to the day. I'm traveling today... so until later tonight. Good Day, Readers.

Do you remember when I told you I read bits and pieces of books... Well, today was no different. I found this book - The Experts' Guide to 100 Things Everyone Should Know How to Do - in my mother's room, picked it up, flipped through the pages and found a lot of interesting points. The best part is it gives you a little crash course on each item that you should know how to do. For example, Conduct an Investigation.

It is a great book to have on an end table for random readings... much like I did today!

Side note, I went to Macy's and Dillard's today and received great products at both places. Clinique Moisture Surge {Thirst Relief... this made me giggle} from Macy's and Lancome UV 20 Daily Moisturizer from Dillard's. Love Free Products!!

It's like the mirrors in the dressing rooms at department stores. I always find at least one weird typo (that spell check didn't catch) or an extra word or a grammar error right after I publish a post. It doesn't matter how fast I click "edit post" to fix it... Google Reader takes it and plasters it all over your Readers like the paparazzi with a bad Brittney photo.

I spelled Laurent (in Yves Saint Laurent) with an "A" instead of "E." It has been changed. I'm sorry for the disrespect to YSL and for making you read such a mistake. I don't know why I can't catch minor mistakes like this BEFORE I hit the publish button. Why doesn't Google Reader recognize edits?

YES, honesty is the VERY best policy! So, I'm going to be completely honest with you... I might be turning into the best Thank You Note writer around but I'm the world's worst at this Award/Tag thing. I'm so deeply sorry! Just because it takes me forever to do these does NOT mean I don't love you and am overly grateful for each of them! I have a lot of people to mention in this post and lots o' thank yous to pass out but I'm not going to play by the rules {which is unlike me. I'm normally a very good ruler-follower (if there are any of my past teachers reading, I bet they will attest) but if you are a Loyal Reader this should be no surprise}.

In the spirit of being HONEST, I will now List 10 honest things about myself {I really hope I don't hurt any one's feelings by not doing ALL of the tags and awards}.

1. I am as SINGLE as a girl can be. My friends call me "Good Luck Chuck" because it seems as though every guy I date gets engaged to the next girl after me. Yep, honest!

2. I'm the first to sign up for a Black Tie Event but I also love thesewith a pair of my favorite jeans, a long sleeve tee and my North Face... and a scarf, of course!

3. I have never balanced my checkbook the old fashioned way. I thank God on a regular basis for online banking.

4. I have a very large imagination. When I was a child, I could play school {or office} by myself for hours and hours... just me & my chalkboard.

5. I drive a BMW 325xi (all-wheel drive for the Midwest winters). It was a gift to my myself when I received a promotion 3 years ago. Probably shouldn't be driving it now as a small biz owner but it's almost paid for.

6. I fear what the future holds for me. I'm extremely afraid that I have set such high expectations that I will be let down.

7. One of my all-time favorite meals is Mac & Cheese, Peas & Fish Sticks. Yes, this is coming from the girl that knows and loves food of all kinds. I have eaten some of the most gourmet meals in some of the finest restaurants but I know when to just go back to the basics! Oh and I'm a HUGE fan of raw oysters {bluepoint to be exact}... #7 was a 2 for 1 but that's ok!

8. I can't sing or dance. I cannot even snap on beat! But that doesn't mean I don't try... the walls of my car probably hate me!

9. I can't remember the last time I read an entire book. I tend to read bits and pieces. {It's a New Year's resolution of mine to read more... and the whole book!}

10. I'm the most loyal person you'll ever meet but I do not let people walk all over me.

How's that for Honesty!?

A lunch is in the making for our Favorite Pregnant Mama... Kelly from The Webb Family! After a big fat typo on the original invitations {Yes, 50 invitations printed with "Quench your Hungry and your Thirst"... Smack myself!}... below is the New and Corrected Design. Classic example of "everything happens for a reason," I'm 100 times more in love with these than I was the first ones.

I purchased A2 Scored Cards from the M by Staples stationery line along with A2 Envelopes in Chocolate brown to make these invitations....

dinner at tom's place

Frost, Kiks, Mandy, Jeff and Yours truly went out last night for a nice dinner, good drinks & great company! We were all in agreement that we had been in the house TOO long. So, to Tom's Place we went. It was terrific as usual.

Mandy even busted out a story from our childhood that I did not remember... She says (so casually), "Oh like in 8th {correction: 7th} grade when I gave you a haircut?" My quick response was, "You did!" We laughed so hard we were practically crying. My mom did not remember either but Mandy reassured her that she was NOT happy about it. I, on the other hand, said, "Well, you must have done a good job or I would remember!" I continue with, "Believe me, I've hated Brad Bramlett since the day he stuck gum in my hair on the school bus and it had to be cut out of my hair resulting in a VERY short haircut." We laughed. And, then laughed even more because the our waiter (I've know forever) over hears the story and (best part) he is friends with the Brad guy now.

Laughing is like detox for the soul!!!

Thanks again, Frost & Kiks, for an outstanding dinner! And, many thanks to the owners Maryjane and Lasse for yet another lovely dining experience and wonderfully delicious food and spirits!!

I Googled "Tom's Place" this morning in hopes to get a picture of the restaurant and I found something even better a short video on the history of the restaurant... it's worth watching!

Because I'm posting instead of getting ready... as usual! ;-) The Kiks and I just decided that we are going to beat the weather and head out for a little while. We are not sure where or what but I'm thinking a snack is in order for this blogging girl! I'm currently obsessed with the Chipotle BBQ Grilled Snack Wrap from McDonalds... it's perfect for a light lunch or afternoon snack. So, do remember when the Wish Fairy paid me a visit when I was in Chicago 10.07.08? Well, long story short I never set it up. I've connected to the Internet maybe 3 times which does not require any set up. I have not downloaded a thing and/or connected it to my computer. The ONLY reason I have not done this is because {as you know} I'm obsessed with getting the iPhone!!! Which leads me to the reason for this post. I'm a bit confused by the amount of butter in the recipe below, and lack of mortar and pestle usage, but the other ingredients you mentioned are all in there. {Looks like it to me, M!! Ingredients
1 lb plus 8 cup unsalted butter, slightly softened
½ cup shallots, finely chopped
1 ½ tablespoons anchovies, chopped into a paste
½ teaspoon red chili flakes
1 tablespoon garlic, finely chopped
½ cup garlic confit puree
½ cup tomato paste
1 ½ tablespoons Dijon mustard
½ cup white vinegar
1/8 cup Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon salt
¾ tablespoon sugar
1/8 cup prepared horseradish
1 teaspoon thyme, finely chopped
1 teaspoon rosemary, finely chopped
1 teaspoon orange zest, finely grated
1 tablespoon butcher grind black pepper

Preparation
Using 1/8 cup of butter, sweat out shallots, anchovies, chili flakes, and chopped garlic until shallots are translucent. Add garlic puree, tomato paste, and mustard and cook out for 2 minutes. Add vinegar and Worcestershire and incorporate fully. Season with salt and sugar and adjust if necessary. Remove from heat, add thyme, rosemary, orange zest, and black pepper and mix well. Spread mixture into a flat pan and cool. Using the kitchen aid mixer, mix butter until smooth and then incorporate flavor base and mix well. Roll into 1 ½” diameter logs and freeze.

I had the pleasure of dining at Quality Meats during my most recent visit to NYC and it far surpassed all of my expectations. We sat at the bar verses sitting at a table and I'm so glad we did. The bartender makes the steak sauce (which by the way is much more than steak sauce... you'll be dipping everything in front of you in it) with a Mortar & Pestle which you would not see if you were sitting at a table. I heard a few of the items... tomato paste, rosemary, thyme... Ahhh, I wish I could remember all of the items. I find this question running through my head, How far will one go for a recipe?

Anyway, the food was outstanding! I polished off a 12 oz. med-rare filet on my own. Yes, you heard correctly. It was slightly embarrassing... especially when my colleague decided to tell his friends when we met them for drinks afterwards!

I will most definitely visit Quality Meats again the next time I'm in NYC. Actually, I'm considering going back to NYC soon... just for the steak sauce!

And, yes, I hate being confined!!

mii wii fit in o nine

Trying to stay on the Workout Track that I started on Sunday with Jenna and Andrea (with a kick boxing class & a short run... btw, I couldn't walk until this afternoon), I decided to attend a body sculpting class with Kiks at her gym earlier today. Well, we arrived and the class was full. Luckily the gym is literally 5 minutes away from 703 so not too much time lost. On our way home Kiks told me about the Wii Fit program she has been doing every morning... Since I was in the mood to workout, I decided tonight was the perfect opportunity to set up my profile on the Wii and start the Wii Fit program myself.

Kiks and Frosty couldn't pass up the opportunity for good free entertainment so they brought their after-work drinks downstairs and watched my first round at Wii Fit. There were a couple of times my dad couldn't breath he was laughing so hard. For example, Wii gives you a "basic balance test"...

If you didn't immediately find this absolutely hilarious, let me tell you my family and friends are probably on the floor laughing. I'm known for falling and tripping A LOT. The stories are priceless!! Although, I'm happy to report that the balance test results said that I'm exceptionally well-balance on my right leg... it's the damn left leg that's really screwing things up!

How about my mii (aka avatar)? Isn't she très chic with her oversized black sunglasses?

I'll keep you posted on my Wii progress. I'm very excited about this - it's so fun!

Good Morning, Readers!!!

I'm happy to report that I'm back at my Desktop in my cozy home office at 703. It is great to be back in my normal routine... wake up to the start of the cappuccino machine, meet Kiks in the kitchen, froth the milk, chat at the island about our schedules for the day, Kiks attempts to convince me (at least once) to revise my schedule to do one of her tasks with her and then I make my way back upstairs and start the day!!

Today is a BIG day. I have a long list of design work to complete, follow up re: NYC trip to Chicago company, prepare for tomorrow's meeting and finalize the New Name that will take the place of Nina Knows Best. It was confirmed the "Hello, Handsomes" were indeed Chris Pine & Zachary Quinto. I would like to thank the Hollywood Foreign Press for choosing these two dashing men to present the Globe for Best Actress in a Television Drama to Freida Pinto {below}. Loved her look, by the way! *Mustard - the gourmet kind, not Frenchs - is one of my fave colors right now.

I loved the extra details of Kate Winslet's dress and I especially love her sincerity. I think it is because I've watch The Holiday so many times that I actually think "Iris" is a really person and a real-life friend of mine.

Renee Zellweger's 2009 Look, Love It! or Hate It! ? Is the BIG question this morning.

I don't necessarily hate it, BUT I don't love it. Especially since I know what she is capable of... like the picture below in an amazing navy blue dress. Do you think I have a thing for Navy or what? {photo credit for the last 3 photos: the huffington post style section}

I'm currently watching the Golden Globes in the comfort of the Hearth Room at 703! It's good to be home but I had to write quickly about a couple of things...

Does anyone else dislike Brangelina? Their attitude makes me what to throw up. I was absolutely disgusted by their "too good" rudeness towards Ryan on the Red Carpet. Then again as a loyal member of Team Aniston they really don't stand a chance with me!

Does anyone know the two guys that presented the award for Lead Actress in TV (Sally Fields was a nominee)?? Hello, Handsomes!!!

I would normally have a laptop to use while watching a glamours award show but a very special little sister decided to take my laptop with her to St.Louis. So please hang in there with me and we can all look forward to me returning to the ever-reliable HP Desktop computer (where the magic happens) in my home office bright and early tomorrow morning! While at The Martha Stewart Show I could not help but notice how cute, comfy & chic the show staff looked in their Hunter Wellies. They either had them paired with skinny jeans or {my fave} a thick pant-type legging!
I found the perfect legging to pair with my Wellies at American Apparel - the Winter Legging in black. Love 'em! Below is one of the Olsen twins sporting the look but only on her bottom half... I'm not feeling the biker jacket at all.

I bought the original color - Hunter Green! If the Queen of England wears her Wellies in Hunter Green then how could I wear any other color? But I love them so much already that I'm considering buying a second pair in Navy... I mean, you know how I feel about Navy blue. How couldn't I?

The night before attending The Martha Stewart Show with Lulu, I had the pleasure of enjoying a lovely Italian meal with our very own publisher of The Dirty Martini Diaries. Lulu covered the story in real time therefore you must check her post as well. The lasagna was to die for... how often can you eat pink sauce and not feel absolutely horrible about it? Embarrassingly, I polished off mine to where even the waiter gave me a smirk when he asked if we needed "to go" boxes! Thank you again for a great dinner date, Lulu! We had to call it a night early because we had a date with Martha bright and early the next morning.

Dear Friends,

Well, I should be at 703 right now but due to lots o' snow in Chicago... My trip has been extended yet again. There is 10+ inches on the ground and it's still coming down as I type these words. The news reports are saying there is MORE to come... ahhh! So, I'm in my comfy clothes and wrapped up in a blanket on the Cogski's couch all settled in for a warm night IN!! Laptop is plugged in and ready for hours of use.

Crap, I just realized I took Advil PM instead of regular Advil... so as long as I don't pass out there are many more posts to come.

I promised to post the Group Photos from the Sig Kap Christmas Party... so here they are!!

Good Morning!!!

Reporting from a real computer for the second time in two days... things are looking up for us, Readers. It's around 11 a.m. CST. My anxiousness to get a post or two in before heading out for the day delayed my trip to the Einstein's so I'm "before coffee" as of right now. Ahh. But anyway, I'm on my way out the door. I have a lunch meeting and then I'm going to try and keep myself warm & dry for the rest of the day... Bloomingdales here I come.

Last Sunday, I had the pleasure of spending the days with My Girls! Meah, Jenna, Andrea and I hit up Mich Ave for a little shopping and then had lunch at the Cheesecake Factory... Cobb Salad my fave!

the Sig Kap Christmas Party was the night before... We were at Heather's house until 1:00 p.m.!! You can check out Jenna's recap here. I do not have that memory stick with me but will post the pictures in Picasa Web Albums as soon as I return home.

Here's the quick dish on my terrible experience on 5th Avenue yesterday...

Walk into Louis Vuitton. Sales Woman standing behind the desk looking at a book (aka doing nothing). I walk up to the counter. I'm standing right in front of her. She doesn't even pick her head up from the book. Finally, I said "Excuse me, I'm interested in this bag (the bag was already on the counter because there was another lady looking at it as well). Never spoke a word only when I asked her "What are the dimensions of the bag?" Her response, "I don't know." She pulls a catalog out from behind the counter and points to the page to where I can read it for myself. I asked her a couple of other questions (which I already knew the answers to but wanted to see how she would respond), she only nodded her head.

Walk down the street to 50th & 5th and enter into Saks Fifth Avenue. I wanted to purchase a pair of a leggings. The kind you wear as pants not as hosiery. Therefore, I go up to the contemporary floor. I see three sales people standing next to a table of denim - again not doing anything with the exception of looking me up and down.

*Side Note: I had on a double-knit black dress, black tights, black wool/cashmere plaza coat, hair in pulled in a low pony, black gloves, black patent Cole Haan pumps, Longchamp work bag and Gucci sunglasses (which I probably should have left on while inside the store and maybe people wouldn't have been looking at me as if I was from outer space). I'm only tell you this so that you know I didn't look like a homeless person. Even though it should NOT matter what I have on. If I'm standing in a store ready to buy something I should receive the same customer service as the next person.

Anyway, not one of them spoke a word. I walk up, say hello. No response. I kindly ask for my request. The guy responds, "I've never seen anything like that." I went ahead and explained again since leggings might be one of the higher trends this season. He responds, "We don't carry things like that in THIS store.

"Needless to say, I was on fire! I just do NOT understand this at all. I'm the customer - you are the sales person. I'm the one buying something that is ultimately going to affect your paycheck. I am still blown away by the terrible service.

On another note, my experience at the Apple Store on 5th was by far the VERY BEST service I've ever received at an Apple Store. Kyle was so kind and generous with the information he gave me. I wanted to buy my pretty white iPhone from him before I left but he advised me that wasn't a wise decision with the fact I was traveling later in the day. How nice was that? Thanks again, Kyle and the Apple Store on 5th!!! What a lovely experience!!!

Being that this is the first time that I've sat at a REAL computer in over a week... I'm like a kid that tasted candy for the first time!!

Here's my current story...

When I arrived at the airport at 4:00 p.m. (extremely early) to find that my flight had been delayed and I would now leave NYC at 7:25 p.m. instead of 6:55 p.m... My anger level started to rise even higher than it already was since I had just had a terrible experience on 5th Avenue at the Louis Vuitton store and then at Saks (which was actually the reason I came to the airport early)!

Then the nice lady that checked me in for my flight said, "It will be fine, Miss, there is a Power Stop and a restaurant/bar in the terminal area and we also have very comfy seating. You won't have any problem passing the time."

My thought of course was "What? Yea Right." Well, to my surprise... she was RIGHT! I'm sitting in the Power Stop by Amex typing away on a very large white Mac desktop!!! YAY!!!

I've been trying to catch up on my Reader and make at least a few comments... I had 600+ posts to read and I still have 300+ to go. I've missed all of you very much!!! Please know that just because I have not been commenting, it does NOT mean I'm not reading your posts... and loving them! Thank you to all that have passed awards and/or tags to me. I promise I will try and get caught up on those as well. I truly appreciate them more than you know! I have SO much more to catch you up on and hope to do so tomorrow morning over coffee!!

It's currently 6:30 p.m. and the voice from the intercom says we are still on schedule to leave at 7:25 p.m. Please say a little prayer for me that it doesn't get delayed even more. Because as much as I'm completely IN-love with this Power Stop, I'm ready to be back in the Midwest. I won't be going to home until later in the weekend but Chicago is home enough for now! Okay, I must eat something now before it's time to take-off. I get motion sickness very easily so eating is a must!! I might be back before I leave NYC for good but if not, much love to all of you and I hope you are staying warm on this VERY cold night!! xoxo, Nina

blackberry blogging getting easier...

It's lunchtime at the office. Blogging from the Blackberry is getting a bit easier - I set up "Create a Post" link in "Bookmarks" within my Browser application. I'm still not a fan of actually creating posts... But at least it's a bit easier. Okay off to Nordstrom (which is literally one block away... It's a good thing I do not work here full time) really quick to return the what I thought were fabulous boots but I am really disappointed in the heel so I'm giving them back.
Must still get a bag - I will mos def report on what I land on. Thanks for all of the "safe travels" notes, I appreciate them so!! Until later... Good Day!

I'm heading to the office soon. I have to be there in an hour. As usual, my hair is wet, no make-up... and I'm blogging instead of getting myself ready... starting to panic a bit. I forgot my work bag at home (5 hours away from where I am at) which isn't a huge issue but it just gives me that "disorganized" feeling! I hate that feeling. I guess if that is the only thing I forgot (thank God I didn't forget my new Cole Haan pumps!) -- I'm doing pretty good! Anyway, on a more positive note the company that I work for here in Chicago is in the same building as the Coach store on Mich Ave... Panic coming to an end. Will just buy new bag!

Still blogging from the Blackberry. I'm getting better at it. Still do not like that I can't link or add pictures but whatever it's not the end of the world. I'll be reporting from NYC so stayed tuned!!

Good Morning, Friends! I cannot believe it's Sunday. I've had a bagel and I am finishing my coffee. I heart walking to the closest Einstein and enjoying a poppy seed toasted with reduced fat cream cheese and medium Vanilla-Hazelnut coffee (1/4 milk)! It a great start to any day. I'm struggling a bit though this morning... Couple of reasons: 1. I'm still blogging from my Blackberry (which I'm not a fan of these days). 2. Packing for a trip in your own house is hard... Try packing from already packed items. I am not sure that makes sense. ;-) I had to pack to come to Chicago and now I'm re-packing to go to NYC. Weird. 3. I need to go to Target. I forgot Black Tights. :-( Major staple in my wardrobe!!! Must go Jenna is ready to go to Ann's. I'm so glad I get to spend the day with my girls!! Have a great day xoxo

Tonight is the Sig Kap Christmas Party. I know, I know, it's January 3rd! We always have the party after the Holidays so that the out-of-towners can make it in AND so that we have something to look forward to when all the buziness of the holiday season is over. I made a cheese and sauage tray (for Andrea) and Spinach articoke dip with baked toasties.
I cannot wait to see my friends! It's been too long since I've seen them last. Andrea (previous Guest Poster), Meah and I are riding together because Jenna (Team Cogski) forgot that it was Chris' birthday... Typical! Team Cogski is going to dinner and then Jenna will meet us at the party! Heather is hosting the party this year...thanks, Fetro Family!!!
Okay, so before I go. I couldn't find a computer today so Blackberry it is for now :-) I did on the other hand a fab pair of Stuart Weitzman boots for almost 60% off! They are beautiful and they make me over 4 inches taller. Yay!!!

Dear Friends,
I have a new Blackberry. I'm officially connected to the world again.
I traveled to Chicago today and will be here until Monday, then off to NYC and back to Chicago to bring next week to an end.
With that being said (or written, I guess), I will post as much as I can but as of now I can only post from my Blackberry which is a total pain. Please excuse typos, grammar error, misspelled words, too many and/or not enough spaces, just to name a few. Thank you so much!

"eat and prosper" ~ music to my ears

Ham & Beans on New Year's Day has been a tradition since I can remember and if you ask Kiks she'll tell you the same thing! So if my calculation is correct our family has been eating this dish that is kind of like stew but a little like soup and it's cooked with the ham bone left over from Christmas for over 50 years!! I did not like Ham & Beans as a child but my mother made me eat at least one (1) bite on New Year's Day so that I would have a prosperous new year with lots of good luck... I thought it was SO weird as a child but as I grew older I loved (and still do) the tradition and actually I have grown quite fond of Ham & Beans!! Oh and don't forget the Cornbread!!

In our local newspaper this morning they covered the tradition of Ham & Beans as well as many others. Here are a few of the highlights from the article:

In Southern Illinois, most folks eat ham and beans for good luck in the new year. But there are many different traditions.

Ruth Parker of Carbondale and Sharon Alstat of Murphysboro were having lunch at Cindy B's in Murphysboro on Tuesday. Parker said her family didn't have a New Year's Day meal tradition. Growing up in northern Illinois, her family simply fixed a regular meal on the holiday, like they would at Thanksgiving or Christmas.

"We never even knew what black-eyed peas were," she said.

In the Alstat house, beans are the norm.

"You have to have beans, or you won't have good luck," she said.

Georgianna Feagns of Flora was visiting her granddaughter in Murphysboro. In her family, eating corned beef and cabbage on New Year's meant good fortune.

"If you want to have money, you have to eat it," Feagns said.

Donna Pugh of Murphysboro subscribes to the beans-mean-success tradition. For good measure, her family has pinto beans, red beans and rice and black-eyed peas.

"I've never had a New Year's when we didn't eat beans," Pugh said.

And has that brought her good fortune?

"Absolutely," she said. "I haven't run out of money, yet."

New Year food traditions

Take your pick from the foods below,
based on whichever group fits your background best or what you like to eat.
After all, a bite of pickled herring is a small price to pay for prosperity.

Beans and peas: Black-eyed peas in the South, lentils in Brazil, green
lentils in Italy and Hungary. Some say it's because they resemble coins. But

Green leafy things: Collards in the

Pork: Stands for
prosperity and abundance in many cultures, from Eastern to Western. There are
several theories, but the most common is that because pigs root while moving
forward, they represent moving forward and gaining riches. (Associated with bad
luck: Cows, which stand still to eat, chickens, which scratch backward, and
lobsters, which move backward.)

Pomegranates: The round seeds represent
coins in Turkey; the vivid red color and the multitude of seeds are lucky, too.

Risotto: In the Piedmont region of Italy. Rice swells when you cook it,
so it symbolizes getting more.

Mandy & Jeff of House of Rose had a wedding to attend so I had a date with the P-Man to celebrate NYE at 703. Frosty was bizzzzzzy all day making not just one but two pots of chili for us to veg-out on all night! Kel, Tom & Log from The Webb Family came over to join in on the fun too. {Make sure to check out their blog... I gave it a little makeover yesterday}

We had a great time... we watched Bugs Life and about two seconds of a more adult-like movie {I think Hancock (?)} and enjoyed Frost's Famous Chili and his new recipe for White Chicken Chili... It was DE-licious! Before we knew it the clocked had turned to the 22nd hour of the 31st of December and it was time for the Boys to head to bed.

Parker and I made it to his house just minutes before his parents which meant Auntie was in bed before the strike of Midnight!!! It was a close one though... 20 more minutes I would have been driving a pumpkin home instead of my ever-reliable little bmw.

NYE 2005.

I'll set the stage for you.

December 31. After my fabulous Quarter-of-a-Century birthday party only 2 weeks before, Jenna and I put on our pjs, ordered take-out and was set to push "play" on the DVR when Joey (Jenna's brother) called in need of a ride to the bar where he would be ringing in the New Year with all of his friends because there were NO cabs to be had in the city of Chicago.

Jenna, of course not able to do a good deed without pay, negotiated a fee that they would pay us to pick them up and take them to Lincoln Park. $50 contract agreed upon... we were in my Tahoe, MATCHING black North Face puffy coats on (yes, it was a sight) and headed to Wrigleville to pick up Joey and his Entourage. We delivered them successfully to their destination and headed back home for our cozy night in.

Here's where the story gets good...

Stopped at the traffic light at Roscoe & Ashland, we notice a group of young kids (college age) trying to catch a cab on the opposite corner...

{Knowing this is close to impossible}

{Jenna} Should we see if they want us to drive them? We could make another $50 bucks!?

{Nina} Great idea! Let's do it.

{Drive through light, pull my over sized SUV to the corner, push the window button - d o w n}

{Jenna} This might seem a bit weird, but we just took my brother and his friends to (insert bar name)... they paid us $50 bucks. Interested?

{Group} Hell Yes.

I swear there were 8 or 10 of them. Thank goodness for the 3rd row! Yes, I had a third-row and no kids ;-)

We made our second successful delivery of the night and headed home with a priceless story and a $100 richer!

Do you see the number is the upper right-hand corner? Yes, it reads 4, 287 emails currently in my inbox. Of course, they date back to months ago because with GMail you leave all messages in your inbox and add pretty labels for organizing purposes. I delete numerous emails a day but sometimes I have to keep them because they are so special. I didn't have any sales or coupon codes or anything else all that interesting in there today so I thought I would share a few emails that I love reading over and over again.

from a farmer who grows and packages carrots for IGA, METRO,

The small cocktail (baby) carrots you buy in small plastic
bags are made
using the larger crooked or deformed carrots which are pulled

Thank you so much, Mrs. Lather, for the recognition in the December 1st article {screen shot below}! I love that you called me "our Girl Friday." I have to admit {embarrassed}... I had to look up the definition of the title but I have to say, I love it!! I think it might be just the inspiration I've been looking for to help with my much-needed new blog name.

I quickly realized the title, Girl Friday, couldn't be more perfect for me based on the Wikipedia definition {see below}. If I had a dollar for every time I heard, "Nin, can you..." I would be a bazillionaire... in a week or two!

Monday is coming to close.

I didn't get nearly as much done as I would have liked today. The laundry is still piled to the ceiling, dry cleaning in a bag at the door, a Christmas gift still sitting in the box that needs to be returned, a pile of 'thank you' notes written and address but not stamped sitting on my desk...

I did manage to...

Finish a few pieces of biz, write two blog posts, return a bunch of emails, shower, get dressed, eat a personal sized pizza for lunch, organize the bills on my desk, returned a handful of voicemails, have salsa for 5 pm snack (daily routine with the fam) and head over to the House of Rose for take-out!

29 minutes til Tuesday. Funny that at 9 pm I said I was going to bed to start reading in 5 minutes. Perfect example of how fast my schedule can get all out of whack. I must start reading more... there is a stack of books on my nightstand that I want to finish... before another year goes by. ;-)

Well, "What's in my Inbox?" & "Target Tuesday" are in store tomorrow. I'm having lunch with Kelly, Log and Aunt Sherry and I'm praying that I'll feel a little more accomplished at the end of tomorrow than I do right now.

Last night I had the pleasure of attending a dinner at the Centralia Country Club to watch my dad and his teammates from the 1974 football team get inducted into the Centralia Sports Hall of Fame!

This is my dad with one of his dad's best friends...

My dad is the one that looks the youngest (far right)... He wore Rock & Republic jeans with a blazer... Yep, he is uber-cool! I'm so proud!!

The last inductee was my dad's high school basketball coach... Coach Jeff Carling. The picture below is of him giving his speech last night. It was one of the most entertaining speeches I've ever listened to!!

Below is a speech that Coach Carling is famous for... my dad has even read this to us at our dinner table a time or two. I must say he does a great impersonation but I was blown away to hear the man himself chant the words... it was as if we were in the locker room during half-time of a tied game! These words are powerful and true... enjoy!

Congratulations again, Dad!! We are so proud of you!

Okay, so I told you that The Montgomery Family was coming to 703 for breakfast yesterday morning. Well, the CEO of the M Family is my long-time best friend, Julie! And, we've known since the first day we met that we were two of the same, but nothing confirms that like what happened yesterday morning...

I think it's safe to say a great time was had by ALL. I told them to come back soon and Montgomery Boy #2 says to me... "No, you come to my house next." So, I'm thinking my weekend trip to Columbia, SC in April just turned into a week long tour of the Carolina's.

Run out and buy this movie today... I loved it. Loved everything about it. No suspense, no murder... just four friends, real-life, friendship, relationships and a lesson about finding yourself and going after your dreams. Plus, it's worth $19.99 just to see Annette Bening's clothes and fab-u-lous accessories!!

Just to give you a sneak peek... I think I might actually think seriously about selling an internal organ for a Hermès {handbag in picture above}... I mean I only need one kidney, right? How much do you think kidneys are going for these days? {Just kidding} And, yes, that is a Burberry leash on the dog!

After watching the movie, I've come to the conclusion that I think I am going to be a frighteningly-wonderful mix between Sylvie Fowler & Mary Haines when I'm finally finished with my 20s! Or at least I hope to be. {Have you figured out by now that I'm not a huge fan of the 20s?}

We just finished Mamma Mia! The Movie and I absolutely LOVED it!! I know I'm probably months behind everyone else on this one so I apologize but I'm so excited I must tell you about it. I literally jumped on top of the square coffee table in the media room and starting dancing along at Dancing Queen!

One of my favorite songs in the movie...SOS! Kiks and I were singing right along. A third of my mother is still living in the 70s and since she raised me on her music - I too know all the words!!

My favorite song in the whole movie and one of my favorite parts {because I can't share my favorite scene in fear I might ruin it for those that have not seen it yet - You know, I might not be the only one}...

{WARNING} Do NOT make the men in your life watch this movie with you... and if you do please have a fresh bottle of tequila ready, right Lulu!?! Frosty was NOT a fan.

I'm currently sitting in the kitchen at 703 watching my parents prepare hors d'oeuvres for our new neighbors that are coming over tonight for some holiday cheer! Hot Crab dip, figs & speciality cheese from Di Bruno's in Philly, homemade {I laugh out loud every time I use the word now} salsa and beef tenderloin stacked on puff pastries with horseradish sauce! I've been testing all of them to make sure they are okay for our guests. haha!

I don't use my laptop much since I'm always working at my desktop and since I really want a MacBook Pro my interest in my old Sony has decreased greatly, you know? But, during the Holidays I've busted it out so that I can hang out with the family AND blog at the same time! My excitement about the old thing started to increase as I started to remember some it's awesome features... like the built-in cam {how I took the picture above}!!

So I'm blogging and eating... typical.

Earlier today, I had the pleasure of shopping & having lunch with The Kiks and my Sister. We hit up Dillards, Target, Hobby Lobby and Macy's. I stocked up on wrapping paper to use throughout the year at Hobby Lobby {the very best wrapping paper} and that's just about it. I thought the sales were pretty lame and the shelves very empty; therefore I guess that leaves me no choice but to start clickin' away on the Internet in hopes that I'll find some great deals!

I also enjoyed some quality time with Mandy & Parker from House of Rose. They met us at the mall this afternoon. We completed a few returns and thought it was time for a snack/drink... I had hot chocolate, M had a strawberry smoothie and P had peanut butter crackers!

I'll keep you posted on my Internet finds. Guests are going to be here in 15 so I better run.

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVE, FRIENDS!!!!

Apparently, I've been VERY good this year... Santa already paid me a visit... Lilly Santa that is.

Okay, the family is off to "run around" as The Kiks likes to call it. We are going to drop off the dogs at the groomers, deliver baskets to friends & neighbors and maybe even fit in a light lunch! {Warning} You might have lost a follower but that doesn't mean I am not reading. I just reached my limit of the # of blogs I can "follow" at once so I'll be "subscribing" to your blog instead. My friend, Mrs. Mojito had this same problem back in October. It's such an odd thing for Google: you can have as many "followers" as will "follow" and you can "subscribe" to as many blogs/newsletters as you wish but you can only "follow" a certain #... I think it's 200. I'm going to write an email to Google... I'm sure they will fix this issue as soon as they read my complaint. ;-)

She has the most adorable family and I feel blessed to be able to read her beautiful stories through her daily posts. Her newest adventure Misc Mer is mos def a M.C.O.!!!

2. Lulu from The Dirty Martini Diaries. Lulu was one of my first friends here in the great big blogosphere! I truly feel as if we've know each other for years. I can BBM her about the most ridiculous thing and she doesn't ask for any sort of explanation and she always gives me the best advise for my current freak out. Lulu, I love your honesty and genuineness and I especially love our shared obsession for Louboutins! 14 Days!!! Can't Wait!

3. Mrs. Mojito from Make Mine a Mojito. Mr. and Mrs. M. are two of the nicest, most down to earth people I've ever met. I enjoy keeping up with their life through MMAM and am extremely grateful that I can now call them both real-life friends! Mrs. M., April will be here before we know it!! Can't Wait!

4. Blue-Eyed Bride is next on the list. BEB was another one of my first friends here in BlogLand and our friendship has continued to grow through the months... just like her belly is growing now!! I had the pleasure of working with BEB on her Family Christmas Card and we had the best time designing a greeting for them to send to all of their friends & family. BEB, I can't wait to meet you in person!

5. Belle of the Ball is fifth on the list. She writes her blog so sweetly and you will feel as if you are sitting across a small table from her at the Sbux down the street.

6. Kappa Prep from Monograms and Manicures was my very first friend in the world of Preppy Bloggers. We are now real-life friends and I adore her generous acts of kindness and her prim & proper ways! Her blog is always a reminder of wonderful traditions and impeccable taste.

7. Preppy 101 from All Things Southern & Preppy is in the #7 spot. {Please remember these are in no particular order} One sentence... I feel like I could drive to her house, walk right in and spend Christmas with her and her family and not one of us would skip a beat! I'm so happy that you have all of your kids with you this holiday season, ST!!

8. Landlocked Mermaid is last but by no means the least! I feel like LM is the older sister I never had! She writes her blog with so much love that you will want to wrap up in a blanket with a cup of hot chocolate and read for hours. LM always goes the extra mile to make everyone feel extra special... and I'm so blessed to have her as a friend!!

I would actually give this to ALL of you but I'm running out of time and for some reason the heat is not working upstairs and my fingers feel like they are going to break off. Must go down for latte #2 now.

Dear Readers,

I just returned from having Christmas lunch with Mrs. Waite's (Oct Bride & real-life BF) family!! We had a wonderful lunch at Granny's and exchanged gifts. Amy & Deb (her mom) surprised me with a new pair of Joe's Jeans... love love love! They are far too generous and my mother is correct when she says "they spoil me!" Nordstrom box with design denim inside and lunch with a BF and her fam.... well, it just doesn't get much better than that!

My gift to Mrs. Waite was a Nordstrom Tissue Cashmere Wrap in Amarillo along with a clutch/wallet from Intuition in LA. Isn't this goldish-yellow color just too die for?

I had over 420 posts in my Reader this afternoon, therefore I could not comment like usual... But I did enjoy your posts as I always do and cannot wait to continue to read about your Holiday celebrations and traditions. Much love, Readers!!

The 703 Crew made a trip to St. Louis to finish up our Christmas shopping. We went ice skating last night in Shaw Park, enjoyed a fabulous meal on The Hill and laid our little heads down at The Ritz for a short winters nap! We are off to the mall so I must run. Mike gave me my Christmas present early since he will be in NJ with The East Coast Fam for the Holidays. He so generously gave me the beautiful blue scarf I have on in both pictures. AND when I arrived at the salon yesterday, they informed me that he had paid for my cut & color!! How sweet is that?

He seriously is one of the best gift givers I know and by far the best Scarf Shopper around! Thank you again, Mike! I think you are "truly a wonderful friend" too :-)
